This article will show you all you need to know about HDR before you buy a smart TV.

1. The core of HDR is the content, not the TV

HDR TVs can only take advantage of HDR if they are paired with HDR content. In other words, without HDR content, buying an HDR TV will not bring out 100% of the level. This is the same as a 4K TV must be paired with 4K content in order to get the rich detail that comes with 4K resolution.

Therefore, the core of HDR is still the content.

2. What does HDR change?

HDR means High Dynamic Range. That is, HDR can make the picture of the highlights and dark details are fully displayed, there will not be situations like all black or overexposure.

Smart TVs equipped with HDR technology can expand the dynamic performance range of brightness, showing a dynamic range similar to that perceived by the human eye, thus bringing a more realistic and excellent picture quality. The core of TV HDR technology is to increase the brightness of the picture, control the brightness of the dark picture, and thus strengthen the contrast between the light and dark picture.

HDR brings an intuitive and perceptible improvement in picture quality that even the average viewer can discern with the naked eye, so many manufacturers have equipped their TV products with HDR technology.

3. Each brand's HRD technology is the same?

The current HDR technology and specifications are different from each other, some are self-developed, some are with the help of third-party common certification technology, the following list of mainstream manufacturers is used by the technology.

  • Sony: self-developed [4K HDR]
  • LG: third-party [DOLBY VISION], [HDR PRO] and [ULTRAHD PREMIUM]
  • Samsung: third-party [ULTRAHD PREMIUM]
  • Panasonic: third-party [ULTRAHD PREMIUM]
  • VIZIO: third-party [DOLBY VISION]
  • Hisense: third-party [DOLBY VISION]
  • TCL: third-party [DOLBY VISION]

In terms of technology, each brand has its own strengths, and since LG produces both OLED and LCD TVs, the technology and certified specifications used by LG are more than adequate and sufficient. Sony's own 4K HDR technology and its own display engine can achieve very good results, most other manufacturers are working with third parties and use their technology and specifications, each with its own highlights.

Summary

HDR is an inevitable product of the times, just like the pursuit of full HD to the later 4K UHD, in fact, we are pursuing the real, and the audio and video technicians have been working in this direction.

Today's HDR addresses the issue of dynamic range. These technical indicators determine how much difference there is between the TV picture and what we see with the human eye. As the times continue to develop, maybe in another decade there will be ultra-high dynamic range UHDR (Ultra High Dynamic Range).

As for those low-cost HDR TVs, they only work on the decoding chip which is only to be able to play but has no picture effect improvement. Therefore, we must pay attention to avoiding these fake HDR when buying HDR TVs.
