Compared to iOS, macOS, watchOS and iPadOS updates, tvOS 13 for TV has not received much coverage and attention. Although the tvOS 13 update is much smaller than other platform systems, it still brings a lot of new features worth trying out. After installing tvOS 13, the most intuitive improvement is the new home screen. The upgraded home screen eliminates the top menu bar and the prominent "Watch Now" screen, replacing it with Apple TV, App Store, iTunes Movies, iTunes TV Show and Apple Music with icons.
Watch Now, on the other hand, can only be accessed from the TV app on the phone, not directly from Apple TV. Previously, the Watch Now area would display the "What to Watch" interface containing recommendations.
Highlighting the App Store naturally brings in App recommendations, as well as increased exposure to Movies and TV shows. The Apple Music icon displays "Today's Video Hits" and automatically plays silent videos. The app can play a full-screen preview of a video on the home screen, similar to what Netflix does when viewing TV shows and movies.
tvOS 13 also brings a new picture-in-picture mode, designed to let you watch TV shows or movies while browsing the rest of the tvOS 13 operating system. Controls at the bottom of the draw in screen allow you to return to the full screen, pause content, and close the draw in draw window.
tvOS 13 supports multiple users, so multiple profiles are available on Apple TV. Each member of the family can log into their Apple TV profile to get a customized list of immediate viewing, content recommendations, and Apple Music playlists. You can switch between configuration files with the new control center. The control center includes time and date, easy access to search, playing widgets, AirPlay controls, sleep features and options to switch between users.
There is a new Apple Music feature that displays scrolling lyrics of synced Music being played, and Apple has added a new wireless audio syncing option that uses the iPhone's microphone to calibrate audio synced to Apple TV, for example through the speaker system.
There is also a new screen saver in tvOS 13, created by the BBC's natural history unit, the team behind the blue planet series. These new screensavers showcase the deep sea around the world, showcasing undersea life and scenes. The new screen saver does not appear to be enabled in beta, but will be available when tvOS 13 is released.
