The Outsider is the adaptation of the homonymous novel by Stephen King by the novelist and scriptwriter Richard Price for HBO which he had already signed with Steve Zaillian , the excellent series The Night Of in 2016. It is already one of the best series of 2020.

What is The Outsider (2020) about?

To believe or not to believe, that is the question. This is the one that the various protagonists will ask themselves, and more particularly Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn).

From the start, the case seems to have been heard, the culprit is Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman). The evidence is against him. Various witnesses saw him at the scene of the crime then crossed him covered with blood, finally his DNA is everywhere on the victim. Armed with these elements, Ralph Anderson is not doing half-measures and will find him guilty without taking the time to carry out an investigation. Only other elements will call into question his guilt. But it is too late, the damage is done, the Maitland family is conspired and quarantined as if they were going to contaminate the “nice” inhabitants of this peaceful town in Maine.

Faced with the misunderstanding of this situation, Howard Salomon (Bill Camp) and Alec Pelley (Jeremy Bobb) will call on Holly Gibney (Cynthia Erivo), a private investigator. During the investigations, she will have to team up with Ralph Anderson and shake up her convictions to bring him to have another vision of the case. These are two spirits who confront each other with their perception of the world, due to their life paths. Meanwhile, He continues his work…

He is among us ...

The Outsider is a continuation of the works of Stephen King. It is no coincidence that I decided to call the monster of its history: It. This refers to That whose recent film adaptation was not successful. Like this one, it has a life cycle during which it attacks children. It feeds not only on their flesh but also on the pain, the emotions caused by their deaths in loved ones.

He is like a bogeyman, hidden in the closet of the children's room, visiting them at night, waiting for his time to come and take them and regenerate themselves by feeding on their innocence. He also attacks adults, or rather, he uses them, immersing them in their childhood terrors. We always come back to childhood, the origin… of evil?

We know him. It is in our children's stories, in religious works and in collective unconsciousness. It has always been there since time immemorial. It has several names depending on the culture, religion and country. The question arises whether it is the devil. But also, is it the only one? The action takes place in the United States, but when is it elsewhere? Are you wandering from one continent to another, from one country to another? Not knowing, staying out of focus borders on fear and it is omnipresent from start to finish.

Like an air of ...

The first season of True Detective . Over the episodes, she came back to my mind, without really being able to put my finger on the reason for this feeling. Is it its rhythm, its narrative quality, its plans on the landscapes along the roads or the duo Ben Mendelsohn and Cynthia Erivo , perhaps a little of all that. That says a lot about the quality of the series, its suffocating atmosphere that hugs us every second, without releasing the pressure by keeping us energized until the last second.

The witness of the evil of Gregory Hoblit with Denzel Washington , John Goodman and Elias Koteas , among others, dating from 1998. In this film, evil moves from one person to another by touch. It is a state of limited possession unlike the series, where He wears out his host until his hunger is satisfied. The paranoid side was interesting, like this idea. The hero no longer knew where he was, this one playing with him, because they knew each other. The dramatic springs are different but this similarity kept bringing me back to this work.
