What can we do when Apple TV app turns gray

There's a Bug with the Apple TV: sometimes the app icon gets grayed out and you can't open the app or do anything else. Today I'm going to talk to you about why this happened and what we can do about it.

Apple TV

If something goes gray, you can't use it In the rest of the Apple ecosystem. On Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD, a graying app is just an app that happens to be graying. There is a small potential problem behind the situation. Here's what you need to do:
  1. Go to Apple TV Settings
  2. Select the system
  3. Click on the restart
In our experience, this permanently fixed it, but some users reported problems reappearing. If so, the solution is still the same -- reboot.

What's going on here

Apple has not commented on this, so we're not sure what's behind it. But we can reasonably determine how it happens -- and why you shouldn't gray out your app.

It seems to be related to the application being updated. No one will enter the Apple TV app store, so if you haven't already, set your app to automatically update.

How do you get Apple TV apps to update automatically
  1. To set up
  2. Select application
  3. Select auto update application
  4. To open it
Now, every time an application is updated, you automatically get the latest version. You'll usually see a blue dot in front of the app's name, just like you do on iOS. Usually, though, you won't notice any difference.

However, it seems like sometimes the update just stagnates. As you can imagine, if this is the case, the application will stop running at the beginning of the process, otherwise it will enter the update phase enough that you can't use the application until the update is complete.

However, when you try to reboot your Apple TV, you will find that the gray issue is immediately resolved. So it seems to have failed in the update process.

Or at least that's what happens if you have a few apps that are graying. When there are so many of them, it's hard to imagine them all being updated at the same time.

Until, or if, Apple comments, we have to guess. But if it's all about updates, there's a good reason to do more than just graying your app.

If an application has been updated, it may be for trivial issues like branding, or it may be more important. Maybe there's a new feature, maybe there's a security issue, maybe there's a bug that's been fixed.

So it could just be an aesthetic issue -- that's still enough to make you want to fix it -- but it could be more. Rebooting your Apple TV is a quick solution to a small problem, but it's worth it.
