Design thinking behind Game Cube controller

Anyone know what led the GC controller to look the way it did? Not saying there was a problem with it at all, just that the design was (and remains) incredibly unique. So curious what the rationale was behind the controller being laid out the way it was 10.0.0.0.1 192.168.1.254.
