Introducing New Ultra 96 Feature Name to Help Consumers Choose the Right HDMI® Cable for Maximum Bandwidth Support

June 25, 2025, San Jose, California, USA — HDMI Forum, Inc. today announced the release of HDMI Specification Version 2.2. The new standard delivers higher bandwidth (96Gbps) and next-gen HDMI Fixed Rate Link (FRL) technology, enabling superior audio and video performance across devices. End-user displays can now optimally support native video formats, ensuring seamless, reliable, and worry-free experiences.

The updated specification supports higher resolutions and refresh rates, including up to 12K@120Hz and 16K@60Hz. It also unlocks premium-quality options like uncompressed full chroma formats, such as 8K@60/4:4:4 and 4K@240/4:4:4 with 10-bit and 12-bit color depth.

Chandlee Harrell, President of HDMI Forum, stated: *“HDMI Forum is proud to introduce the HDMI 2.2 specification, enabling groundbreaking immersive solutions with elevated performance and features. The new Ultra 96 feature name will help consumers and end users verify their devices support maximum bandwidth.”*

Ultra 96 is a feature name manufacturers can use to indicate compliance with HDMI 2.2 and support for 64Gbps, 80Gbps, or 96Gbps bandwidth. Products marketed with Ultra 96 must use Ultra 96 HDMI® cables to ensure full bandwidth support. These new cables handle up to 96Gbps and all HDMI 2.2 applications, while existing Ultra High Speed HDMI® cables remain compatible with systems up to 48Gbps.

Like Ultra High Speed HDMI cables, Ultra 96 HDMI cables are part of the HDMI Cable Certification Program. Each length variant undergoes rigorous testing, certification, and labeling for consumer assurance.

The specification also introduces Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), improving audio-video sync—especially in multi-hop setups like AV receivers or soundbar systems.
