First Impressions

The overall impression of this projector is that it is a solid choice for a stationary setup due to its size and weight. While it lacks portability features such as an integrated battery and auto keystone correction, it compensates with a decent built-in speaker that eliminates the need for external audio equipment. The use of a DLP technology with a lamp light source provides a reasonable lifespan, although users should be prepared for the eventual need to replace the lamp. While it offers improved image quality over standard 1080p through pixel shifting, it falls short of delivering true 4K resolution, highlighting its mid-range capabilities. Overall, this projector is best suited for users seeking a robust home theater experience rather than a portable solution.

Viewing Experience
Overall Impression: The Optoma UHD35s projector delivers a solid viewing experience, particularly in dark environments, thanks to its satisfactory native contrast. However, it falls short in color performance, with sub-par color light output that prevents colors from standing out vibrantly. While it excels in covering the Rec. 709 color space for SDR content, it struggles significantly with the wider Rec. 2020 color space for HDR content. The projector's brightness uniformity is decent, and its white light output is commendable, but the limitations in color presentation may detract from its overall appeal for those seeking a more dynamic visual experience.

System Experience
Overall Impression: The projector features a 10W built-in speaker, providing decent audio output for its size. It includes a 1.5A DC Out USB port, allowing for convenient power delivery to devices such as streaming dongles. Additionally, the inclusion of a 12v trigger out port enhances usability by facilitating automatic control of a compatible projection screen. However, the lack of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity may limit its versatility and ease of use in wireless streaming scenarios.

• Onboard speakers are subpar; external sound system recommended
• Some users reported issues with color accuracy and black levels
• Potential flickering or distortion reported in certain modes
• Occasional software bugs affecting HDR functionality

Overall Impression:
The Optoma UHD38 projector delivers impressive 4K image quality and brightness, making it a strong contender for both movies and gaming. While it lacks some advanced features like lens shift and has a few usability concerns with the remote and audio, it stands out for its vibrant colors and low input lag. Ideal for users seeking a budget-friendly projector with solid performance, it excels in well-lit rooms and offers a captivating viewing experience. However, potential buyers should be aware of its limitations and consider their specific needs, especially regarding setup and audio output.

Scored a sweet deal on a refurbished projector and decided to give it a shot. Looks brand new and works like a charm! Had to tweak a couple of cables since it’s different from my old 142, but I got it all sorted. It's about 14 feet from my 100" screen, and wow, the video quality is a big step up from my old 142X. This might be the last projector I buy!
