Samsung plans to make a full investment in next-generation display technology QNED from next year, but due to technical difficulties, the time when QNED technology is actually applied to TV and put on the market is expected to be after 2021.

Quantum dot nano-light-emitting diode (QNED) is a derivative of nano-scale semiconductor particle quantum dots and nitrogen light-emitting diode (GaN LED) technology, which theoretically has the advantages of long life, high brightness, low power consumption and decombustion.

Samsung will invest on QNED display technology instead of QLED

The characteristic of QNED display technology is that the blue light emitting substance of the current quantum (QD) display screen is changed to LED, and the QD is coated on the Nano LED structure by inkjet printing. Since LEDs are inorganic, there will be no defects such as screen burning and life problems, so Samsung uses QNED as a transfer point between QLED and Micro LED.

YubiResearch representative Li Zhongxun said that with Samsung Display's full exit from its LCD business, coupled with the fact that Chinese display manufacturers are actively researching OLED technology, the emergence of QNED may be an opportunity for Samsung Display. Samsung may carry out billions of won investment. Samsung Display expects to produce 30,000 QNED panels per month from the second quarter of 2021.

The report said that despite the large amount of investment, due to technical difficulties, the QNED technology will actually be applied to TV and put on the market after 2021.

QNED's light source-GaN LED uses the inorganic compound GaN to emit the blue light with the highest energy among the three primary colors (red, green and blue), but the QD-OLED light source is not an LED, but an organic compound blue OLED element. From the perspective of material properties, organic The compound ratio electrodeless compound is not resistant to oxygen or moisture, and is prone to burn-in and has a short life span. Samsung Display decided to develop QNED in order to overcome the shortcomings of QD-OLED.

QNED stands for QD + Nano LED, which is a new technology that places quantum dots (QD) on Nano LED by inkjet printing to enhance color reproduction. Samsung uses the term "Nano LED" instead of MicroLED to highlight the specificity of next-generation technology.

If the QD display ready for mass production combines the QD based on the OLED structure, QNED will apply QD to the nanoLED structure by inkjet printing.

QD, like OLED, is not heat resistant and easily oxidized. If the QD is placed on the LED in the form of a film or liquid, heat will be generated from the LED, which will reduce its performance and make it difficult to work properly. It takes a lot of effort to protect QD materials from heat, such as mixing different materials, which reduces the purity of QD and makes it difficult to operate properly. Taking into account the shortcomings of these QD materials, Samsung Display seems to have begun to adopt nano LEDs.

Micro LED is a technology that reflects semiconductor technology, and QD is a competitive material invested by Samsung for more than 10 years. Therefore, QNED, which is considered to graft nano LED and QD together, is likely to become its new generation of display technology.

The industry predicts that QNED technology will develop into LED display technology that can emit three primary colors of light in the future. Just like Micro LED Display, a GaN LED is equivalent to a pixel. The GaN LED is made into a nanoscopic three-dimensional structure. In theory, one element can be formed The production cost of light of various wavelengths is more advantageous than MicroLED.

LCD panels and related products are gradually going down the stage. Worrying that the market for QLED TVs will not be sustainable and the main products such as Micro LED TVs still need time, Samsung may launch QNED TVs to fill the transition period.
