HDR is a photo technology that, when used properly, can provide visual enjoyment by adding more detail to the light and dark areas of a photo. Many TVs are now equipped with DHR technology, so what does it really mean for TV displays? What's the difference between turning HDR on or off? When should HDR be turned on?

What is HDR?

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. In short, it is the range of light and dark tones in a picture. The human eye has a very high dynamic range - that's why we can see detail in shadows and highlights. A TV with HDR mode means it offers a higher dynamic display range, which means it can show more detail in both light and dark. HDR does provide a great deal of depth to the picture and makes the subject matter stand out. Highlights are nicely rendered in HDR without sacrificing subject matter.

When to use HDR on TV?

HDR is useful when taking pictures with a camera because it can help show details of where the sun is shining and where the shadows are falling when you can't balance the light in a photo of a landscape. Likewise, HDR can be used in TV displays to select the best display for you. TV HDR extends the contrast and color palette of your TV to provide a more realistic and natural-looking image than HD TV.

HDR can provide brighter highlights, as shown on the TV to the right. Keep in mind that you are using a non-HDR screen that is reading this article and the brighter highlights will not appear as bright to you.

HDR TVs will provide better picture quality than other TVs. the best performing TVs for HDR are LCD-based models, those with local dimming, and OLED TVs.
