8K TVs that support the new AV1 video codec can now stream YouTube videos at 8K resolution, a feature that will be available on Android TV later this year.

YouTube not only supports streaming AV1 on your TV, but also streams 8K video in the AV1 format, which means you can now watch 8K YouTube videos on compatible 8K TVs.

LG and samsung's 2020 8K models are among the first to support the decoding of AV1 hardware. You can see YouTube 8K (60fps) playing in the LG 2020 8K LCD TV NANO95 below. Yesterday, TCL said its new X915 8K TV will also support YouTube 8K video in the AV1 format, but to enable it will require an update to Android 10, which is scheduled for later this year. Philips also revealed that they will also support the AV1 format.

What is AV1? It is a new royaltics-free video codec and format developed by the open media alliance, which brings together heavyweights such as amazon, apple, Facebook, Intel, Netflix, LG, Microsoft and samsung. AV1 has the potential to bring 4K HDR to more devices and streaming services. At CES 2020 in January, YouTube confirmed that it needs AV1 support to stream 8K videos on 8K TVs, even though its 8K videos are available in PC browsers in other formats.

YouTube is the first major streaming provider to offer 8K online video on 8K TVs. It has a wide selection of demos and user-generated videos, but no movies or TV shows, and no streaming services like Amazon Prime or Netflix have announced plans to offer 8K content.
