A 2016 5.1 mix still shows up most Atmos tracks: Don't Breathe at 10

Don't Breathe reached cinemas on 26 August 2016 and never got a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. On streaming it is usually 1080p with a 5.1 track, no Atmos. What Hi-Fi went back to it this week because it has sat in their test rotation for years, and the conclusion is one that gets lost in every soundbar spec argument: the mix matters more than the channel count.

Fede Alvarez built the film around a blind man's hearing. The whole premise collapses if the sound design cannot place things precisely inside a small house, so you get footsteps behind you, a door to your left, and long stretches where the loudest thing in the room is nothing at all. A 5.1 bed that does that properly will beat an Atmos track that scatters ambience into the height layer because the format was in the contract.

That matches what I hear on a lot of newer discs. Plenty of Atmos mixes on modern releases are functionally 5.1 with some rain overhead. The older, tighter mixes stress a system harder, because dynamic range and accurate panning are much harder to fake than object count is.

Where the age does cost you: no 4K disc means no lossless track and no HDR, so you are judging a compressed stream. For formal testing that is a real limitation, and I would not use it to evaluate a system I was about to buy. For watching it on a Tuesday it matters far less than people pretend.

If you demo a system for someone, which older non-Atmos title do you reach for, and what specifically does it expose that a modern release does not?

Silence is the actual test. Half the systems I have heard have a noise floor that wrecks those long quiet stretches, and no amount of height channels fixes it.

Master and Commander for me. That 5.1 still moves round the room better than most of the Atmos remixes I have sat through since.

Partly disagree. A properly done Atmos mix does something 5.1 cannot, it just is not most of them. Blame the studios doing tick-box upmixes rather than the format.

Worth flagging that streaming 5.1 at whatever bitrate Prime hands you is not the same thing as the disc. Matters if anyone is judging kit off it.
