Choosing an external hard drive for Xbox One is not easy when you see the supply of hard drives that has grown over time. With the arrival of Xbox One X and games whose weight continues to increase, it becomes almost essential to buy an external hard drive for your Xbox today to increase the capacity of your console. Here is our guide to choosing the right hard drive.

Which hard drive is in my Xbox One?

If you're not sure which hard drive is on your Xbox One, it's normally listed on the console box when you purchase it. There are different models of Xbox One that have 500 GB, 1 TB or 2 TB (more rare) hard drives. The Xbox One X, it only offers a hard drive of 1 TB or 2 TB depending on the model.

With games that often occupy between 50 GB and 100 GB, we quickly reach the maximum capacity of the console's hard drive as soon as we have a dozen games. This is all the more true these days with titles like Call of Duty Modern Warfare + Warzone which take up a lot of space. Whether you own an Xbox One S console or an Xbox One X, this article is valid for all models of the console.

Which compatible hard drive for Xbox One?

Your Xbox One compatible external hard drive must meet the following conditions:

  • The hard drive must be USB 3.0 compatible (supplied most of the time).
  • The hard drive must have a minimum capacity of 256 GB.
Our selection of hard drives below is compatible with Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, but also obviously, with a PC. To give you an idea of the space you need on Xbox, here is some data assuming that a game averages 60 GB:

  • 500GB hard drive = 8 games to install
  • 1TB hard drive = 16 games to install
  • 2TB hard drive = 33 games to install
  • 4TB hard drive = 66 games to install
