When purchasing a projector, people have no idea about what type of projector to buy mainly because they don't know the difference between LCD and DLP projector. This article will tell you what are the differences between LCD and DLP projectors, and what type of projector should be selected for ypur home.

1. What is LCD projector?

LCD liquid crystal is a substance between liquid and solid. It does not emit light. Its working properties are greatly affected by temperature. Its working temperature is -55oC~+77oC. The arrangement of liquid crystal molecules will change under the action of an electric field, which affects the transmittance or reflectivity of the liquid crystal cell, thereby affecting its optical properties, and producing images with different gray levels and colors. It is a new type of flat display technology.

The imaging device of the LCD projector is a liquid crystal panel, which is a passive projection method and uses an external light source to project the display.

1-1. How does LCD work?

The principle of the three-chip LCD panel projector is that the optical system passes the strong light through the beam splitter to form three RGB beams, which are respectively transmitted through the RGB three-color liquid crystal panel. The signal source undergoes AD conversion and modulation is added to the LCD panel. By controlling the opening and closing of the liquid crystal unit to control the on and off of the light path, the RGB light is finally converged in the prism, and is projected on the screen by the projection lens to form a color image.

2. What is DLP projector?

The core of the DLP digital light transmission processor is the DMD™ (Digital Micromirror Device™) developed by Texas Instruments. A single-chip DMD consists of many micromirrors, and each micromirror corresponds to a pixel, and the area of the pixel is 16μm×16μm (The new version is 14μm×14μm). The physical resolution of the DLP projector is determined by the number of micromirrors. The technology of the DLP projector is an all-digital reflective projection technology.

Product types of DLP:

Single-chip DMD machine (mainly used in portable projection products)

Two pieces of DMD machine (applied to large mosaic display wall)

Three-chip DMD machine (applied to ultra-high brightness projector)

2-1. How does DLP work?

A chip of DLP has a reflective surface with thousands of tiny mirrors that are used in conjunction with a light source to reflect digital images to any surface.

3. Technical development and characteristics of LCD and DLP projector

3-1. Developments and Features of LCD projector

Developments:

(1) The sound of LCD technology in the market is indeed much smaller than that of DLP technology. It's just that the early technology of LCD is relatively mature, so people ignore its changes. In fact, LCD technology has also undergone great changes.

(2) LCD projector products are still ahead of DLP products in terms of cost control and application fields. Some products have better performance than DLP products, and their market share and rich product models are also advantages.

(3) In terms of high contrast and miniaturization that DLP products have traditionally been superior to LCD products, LCD technology has also shown its potential.

(4) At present, LCD technology has sufficient strength to meet the challenges of DLP technology. From the perspective of technological development, LCD technology is still on the rise.

Features:

(1) The production and R&D capabilities of the LCD panels of LCD projectors have been controlled by Sony and Epson. After years of development, the LCD panel technology has become more mature.

(2) Liquid crystal panel technology has been committed to improving performance and reducing processing costs. At present, LCD projectors have reached a very high level in terms of brightness index and image fineness. In addition to high-end cinema products, in general application products and low-end high-performance projector products, LCD products have maintained a leading edge in brightness over DLP products.

(3) The size of the LCD panel is an important factor in determining the miniaturization of the projector. With the application of 0.7-inch and 0.5-inch LCD panels, LCD projectors have the ability to miniaturize.

3-2. Developments and Features of DLP projector

Developments:

(1) DLP technology seems to be chasing the path of Intel Inside. TI requires all projector products using DLP technology to be marked with the DLP logo.

(2) The most common structures of DLP projectors are single-chip and 3-chip. Among them, the 3-chip structure is mainly used in cinema systems and high-performance products, and the products for common applications are all monolithic structures. When talking about the comparison between DLP technology and LCD technology, it is mainly based on the comparison between single-chip DLP technology and 3-chip LCD technology.

(3) The commonly used DLP projector is a single-chip structure, so that its optical system can be designed simpler, smaller in size, and lighter in weight. The advantage of a single-chip DLP lies in the miniaturization of the product.

Features:

(1) Due to the reflective principle, high contrast has always been the advantage of DLP projector products. The high contrast ensures that the projected image has better clarity, and is better than LCD products in text display, graphic display, and black and white photos. The high contrast also compensates for the lack of color performance of DLP projectors to a certain extent.

(2) The single-chip DLP projector uses a color wheel to achieve color separation, and the three primary colors use the same imaging component. Compared with a 3-chip LCD projector with an imaging system for each of the three primary colors, a single-chip DLP projector has always been worse than a 3-chip LCD projector in terms of color saturation. With the development of DLP technology, the color performance of DLP projectors has also been greatly improved.

4. LCD and DLP lifespan comparison

As far as the display device is concerned, the DMD of the DLP projector has a longer life than the LCD. The life of DMD is more than 100,000 hours, which is beyond the reach of LCD.

However, the projector is composed of optical system, circuit system, light source system and display device, and its life is determined by its weakest link in the system, and it is also affected by technological development. Therefore, the long life of the DMD does not mean the long life of the whole machine.

At present, it is still unclear whether the lifespan of DLP projectors and LCD projectors is long or short. The lifespan of the projector is closely related to the design level and use environment of the whole machine.

5. LCD and DLP heat dissipation comparison

Except for part of the energy generated by the projector's light source, which is turned into a light signal and displayed on the screen, the rest will be absorbed by the internal components of the projector and converted into heat, causing the components to generate high temperatures. This will directly affect the performance and stability of the optical components used in the projector, resulting in poor color reproduction of the projector, which not only affects the display effect, but also affects the life of the projector due to the aging and damage of the components.

DLP projectors are generally designed for the requirements of commercial users and mobile offices. Taking into account the portability and cost, the whole machine is compact in structure and small in size, so it is not conducive to long-term use. The cooling function of LCD is better.

6. LCD and DLP color reproduction comparison

In terms of color reproduction, LCD projectors generally use three liquid crystal panels to achieve RGB three-color display. The color of the picture is more layered than the image displayed by the method of using a single-chip DMD to generate colors using the color wheel sequence, and the color saturation is better.

7. LCD and DLP uniformity comparison

As for the uniformity of the projector, it is not only related to the display device, but also related to the design of the whole machine including light source selection, optical system design, circuit compensation technology, etc., LCD projectors and DLP projectors can be very high The uniformity.
