Dolby Atmos and DTS Audio Effect

As TVs become more and more widely used, many people's demand for TV sound systems is gradually increasing. But I believe there are many people who have the same question as me: What is Dolby Atmos? What is DTS decoding? Dolby Atmos and DTS decoding, which is better for watching TV? Let's take a look.

What is Dolby Atmos?

Dolby Atmos is a technology invented by an American company founded in 1968. In addition to the invention of Dolby panoramic surround sound technology, the company has also invented a number of technologies such as noise reduction systems and high-definition audio technology, which have had a huge impact on movie audio and home audio.

Dolby panoramic surround sound technology is to synthesize four-channel stereo into two channels through a specific encoding method during the recording process.

The original left, right, center and surround signals are mixed into LT and RT mixed two-channel signals. In the process of playback, the two-channel composite signal LT and RT can be re-encoded into four non-interfering signals of left, center, right and surround through the decoder, and they are independent of each other. And then input into each sound respectively, so as to present the sound to the user more realistically.

What is DTS?

Like Dolby, DTS is a company founded in 1993 by Universal Studios and Spielberg. "Jurassic Park" as we know it is the first movie to use DTS decoding technology. Now, DTS is also used in many home theaters, DVD players, TVs, set-top boxes, high-definition media players, car audio systems and other equipment.

DTS stands for Digital Theater Systems, which optimizes the flaws in Dolby Surround. Because Dolby sound and Dolby data store sound effect data between the perforations of the film, the consequence of this is that due to space constraints, a large number of compression modes must be used, and part of the sound quality has to be lost.

So DTS company will store the sound effect data in another CD-ROM on this basis, make it synchronize with the video data. This not only increases the space, but also the data flow can be relatively larger, so that the CD storing the sound effect data can be replaced, so as to play different digital language versions.

Dolby Atmos and DTS decoding, which is better for watching TV?

So, which is better for watching TV, Dolby Atmos or DTS decoding? Which parameter is more useful when choosing a TV?

Dolby Atmos and DTS decoding, which is better for watching TV.jpg

1. Sense of hearing

The sound quality of Dolby Surround will be mixed, and the volume of the same parameters will be higher. There is a feeling of surrounding you from all sides, which can bring an immersive experience.

The DTS sound quality will be purer, and its biggest advantage is that the sense of positioning is much better than that of Dolby. Because Dolby Surround is more three-dimensional and has a surrounding feeling. It's hard to tell exactly what the person on the left is saying and what the person on the right is saying with your eyes closed. But DTS is very accurate and it is easy for you to distinguish the sound source from up, down, left and right.

2. Voice data flow

The data flow of Dolby and DTS speakers is different.

The standard data flow of DTS in DVD is 1536kbps, while the data flow of Dolby Digital is 384Kbps-448Kbps, which can be up to 640Kbps. From this point of view, the larger the DTS sound flow, the less likely the sound is to be compressed. As a result, DTS sound is less damaged and sound quality is better.

3. Mainstream

At present, many mainstream high-end TVs actually use Dolby Surround & DTS dual decoding technology, but when niche TV brands cannot satisfy both technologies at the same time, many niche brands prefer Dolby Surround. I believe they do this because more consumers are willing to choose TVs with Dolby Surround.

Moreover, Dolby Atmos is currently being used by mainstream streaming media and smart device companies around the world. It can be said that Dolby covers more and larger areas.

Summarize

All in all, for now, Dolby Surround TV is better. Of course, it is best to choose a TV that supports Dolby Surround & DTS dual decoding technology.
