In Cannes premiere last year, the Hors normes (2019), also called The Specials / The Extraordinary, which has received seven nominations for Caesar prize, is the latest self-made and self directed film by two directors of Intouchables, just like the former warm feeling focuses on another helpless "miserable world". Hors normes scored 7.5 points on IMDb which was under-rated in my opion.

The film Hors normes tells the daily life of autism care institutions. One day, the ordinary days were broken by investigators. Bruno's agency is likely to be shut down because it has no credentials. But as investigators questioned everyone, Bruno's philanthropy and importance gradually emerged.

Joseph was the patient he cared for every day for more than ten years. He was also the first patient. He also found work for Joseph, and it was very difficult for people with autism to find work. Another important patient, Valentin, was more seriously ill. He had a serious tendency of self harm and could not communicate normally. He's got everybody in a mess.

In order to fully support this non-profit business, Bruno is still single. When we meet each other, the organization's "call for help" is as promised, and the people we meet are scared away by this situation. Because of this, all the voices the investigators received supported Bruno. He gave hope to the mother of the patient, relieved the pressure of the hospital, and was the hero of his colleagues.

In the film Hors normes, questions come why does the hospital keep calling me to take in the children? If all the children are handed over to the government, can you take care of them? It's not that Bruno wants to receive them, it's that no one wants them. The deafening and enlightening rhetorical questions made the investigators who set the standard speechless.

Autism, the topic in Hors normes, as an increasingly important disease, has been discovered for only half a century. It was even thought that it was caused by parents' dereliction of duty. In the 1980s, a detailed study was carried out to analyze the causes of the disease from the perspective of genetics. Unfortunately, the causes are still unclear. Most of the patients have mental retardation, that is, the mental age can only reach the level of children.

There are many films that focus on autistic groups. They make voices for autistic patients from different aspects and quietly narrate their difficulties and efforts to the audience. The difference of Hors normes is its focus, not the patients themselves or their families who are divorced from society. They are also The Extraordinary institutions and caregivers. With a relaxed and warm story, it raises a serious social question: who is responsible for autism?

They are not wrong, nor sinners, born to suffer from disease. However, hospitals and public social institutions divide patients into 369 grades, which is the standard of social treatment of patients. Patients outside the standard are abandoned by the society. They can't work and have nowhere to go. They stay at home all day, which makes the situation worse.

Similar to the situation in film Hors normes, not accepted by the society, whether parents can deal with their children patiently, whether they have the ability to educate their children and ensure their living environment is a new problem. Because fighting autism can be quite a long, even painful process.

Private institutions outside the standard in Hors normes give them hope. Bruno has no standards, he treats patients equally, and more than 40 children are treated and cared for here. Facing the dilemma of being unable to pay and being investigated for operating without a license, he never gave up. The people they employ are also young people who are outside the standard.

It's not only the autistic children who are saved and cured by Bruno, but also the young people who may abandon themselves and go astray. The clever design of the director of Hors normes has found more resonance for people to understand autistic patients. Bruno's "out of standard" institutions reduce the huge social burden, and even if they are not qualified, the government allows them to continue to operate in order to avoid problems. The movie gives a gentle and helpless ending. As usual, autistic patients grow up step by step with the help of nursing staff.

But in reality, not every institution is like the voice of justice. To improve the situation, we need more understanding, tolerance and support as much as possible. As in the film Hors normes, Bruno and others watch Joseph dance freely on the stage in colorful clothes. What autistic people experience is not another color of life, but also should be respected and understood.
