I just read an interesting report. Here to share with you. Recently, the latest research report shows that in the first quarter of 2020, the total number of cable TV users decreased by 3.14 million, down to 206 million, among which, the number of cable digital users decreased by 2.02 million, a total of 190 million, the number of cable digital TV subscribers was 142 million, a net decrease of 1962000. Cable TV's share of home TV viewing dropped to 45.58%. If calculated at the same rate of decline, CATV will be completely out of the sight of Chinese consumers in 16 years, but from the development of the actual market, the time may come earlier.

The rise of streaming media and the bleakness of cable TV

Around 2015, with the cost reduction and speed-up of the three major telecom operators, mobile traffic increased significantly, accompanied by the rapid development of mobile apps, especially streaming media, mobile games and other applications with large traffic. From the perspective of the use time of mobile Internet users, the total use time of live video (long video + short video + live video) accounts for 27%, second only to social network, and the total use time of both accounts for about 60% of the user's use time. The data shows that in the first half of 2019, the number of online video (online video + short video) users is 759 million, and the online video market scale in 2018 is about 88.8 billion yuan respectively.

According to the data analysis, more than 70% of streaming media users are after 80s and 90s, and a large number of young users gather in the overall ecosystem. In particular, some vertical streaming media, such as Bili bilibilibili (station B), also have a large number of users after 95s. This means that their next generation will also be a loyal audience of streaming media.

In terms of cable TV, Comcast, the U.S. cable network operator, saw a decrease of 106000 users in its third quarter of 2018, the sixth consecutive quarter of decline, with its video revenue down 2.9% year-on-year. According to a study released by emarketer, a market research company, 33 million Americans will abandon cable pay TV and use streaming media services such as Netflix in 2018, up 33% year-on-year from a year ago.

In China, according to the National Bureau of statistics, since 2016, the total number of cable TV users in China has declined year by year. Some insiders call for cross-border cooperation and a new business model of transformation if cable TV is to continue to exist.

Is "new" cable still cable TV?

Cable TV has been criticized for many reasons, including single content, long advertising, a set-top box can only correspond to one TV, unreasonable fees and so on. In addition, many TV stations are also strengthening the integration with new media, which brings great pressure to cable TV operators.

In this case, some people proposed to build "smart radio and television" to accelerate the transformation of intelligence. With innovation as the core force, promote the overall transformation of the industry, establish corresponding technical support bases, especially with the support of cloud computing, big data, Internet of things, IPv6 and other comprehensive technologies, and with the goal of integrating intelligent media communication, comprehensively improve the management, network, business and service capabilities of radio and television.

However, as for cable TV, it is a network that uses optical cable or coaxial cable to transmit broadcast TV signal or locally broadcast TV signal. Let this technology adapt to the 5g that is going to be wireless, is cable TV still "cable"?
