Indiecalypse, developed by the studio JanduSoft, Indiecalypse is a Point 'n Click which tells us the story of three young people who embark on the creation of an indie game. Packed with black humor and numerous references to pop culture, the game benefited from a successful Kickstarter campaign and is now available on our favorite game stations.

Indiecalypse Review: The three losers

Indiecalypse offers us to follow three young people who are embarking on the development of an independent game in order to win a game jam and win 10,000 dollars. Each one specializes in a field: Jack development, Ethan music and Violet visuals. At first, they don't know each other and each follow their own path.

Become a rockstar of the code!
However, all three have something in common: a rotten life! We discover their history and how with murders, drugs, violence, insults and many other galleys, they met around this independent game project.

The story is divided into several chapters, all stuffed with delicious black humor to which are added references and parodies of many elements of pop culture. The mixture is explosive and works extremely well. We have fun finding the least of these elements and finding their origin.

Beware the creeper
The least we can say is that there are REALLY many, and of all kinds! We should not be surprised to find Pikachu smashing zombies, while answering Jean-Pierre Foucault's questions against the backdrop of Motörhead.

In addition, the game benefits from a high quality French translation that does not distort the puns and humor, served throughout the game, say Fideo Kojina. We regret that the duration of the adventure is very short. Indeed, it took us just under 3 hours to finish the story and unlock all the successes.

Indiecalypse Review: One game, twenty different gameplay
Indiecalypse is a Point 'n Click where you move through several settings to interact with objects or characters. No riddle is to be solved with an assembly of objects to collect or other elements usual in the genre. However, the title finds its originality in the fact of offering many different gameplay mechanics in mini-games.

Drugs are bad see me
We grant you, on paper, this proposal can be scary. Rest assured (or almost), the mini-games will make you smile. Indeed, these are entirely parodic sequences VERY inspired by other titles. We thus find works such as Guitar Hero, Enter the Dungeon, The Binding of Isaac, Mortal Kombat and many others that you lets discover.

Thus, each mini-game has its own way of playing and allows you to vary the pleasures. On the other hand, it is a pity that the explanations provided at the beginning of each of them are so unclear.

Does that remind you of anything?
No text, no command are present, only a series of screenshots unfortunately not precise enough. Fortunately, for the most part, it is quite easy to understand alone what to do (even more if you know the parodied game), but for others, learning will be by failure.

Finally, the visual and sound atmosphere is very good. With the style of drawing used, it almost feels like watching a cartoon episode like South Park or American Dad to name a few, with even more gore, violence and dark humor.

The hunters' corner: Indiecalypse offers 34 successes for a total of 1000G. Very easy, finishing the story should unlock almost all of them. You just have to think about interacting with all of its environment so as not to miss a mini-game and its associated success.

Indiecalypse Review: Balance sheet
Indiecalypse Pros :
  • An explosive cocktail of dark humor and a parody of pop culture
  • The scenario
  • Variety of proposed gameplay phases
Indiecalypse Cons:
  • Too short
  • Explanations of the mini-games not clear enough

For all those allergic to black humor and pop culture, go your way. For the others, what are you still doing there? Go for it! Indiecalypse is savored as if you were watching a cartoon like South Park, with even more black humor. The references to pop culture are omnipresent, in the dialogues, the names of the characters, the sets or even through the twenty mini-games present and parodying titles such as Guitar Hero or Mortal Kombat. We only regret that the game is too short (less than 3 hours) and that the mini-games are not explained clearly enough.

You're describing a proposal for a game that incorporates parody and inspiration from various popular titles. Combining elements from games like Guitar Hero, Enter the Gungeon, The Binding of Isaac, Mortal Kombat, and more can create a unique and entertaining player experience. Parody sequences can add a comedic twist and provide a lighthearted break from the main gameplay.
Drawing inspiration from different games allows for a diverse range of gameplay mechanics and styles, which can keep players engaged and excited to discover new challenges. For example, incorporating rhythm-based gameplay from Guitar Hero, bullet-hell mechanics from Enter the Gungeon, roguelike elements from The Binding of Isaac, and intense fighting sequences from Mortal Kombat can create a dynamic and ever-changing gameplay experience.
Players can enjoy nostalgia, humor, and exciting challenges by incorporating these different gameplay styles and parodic elements. It can also allow players to appreciate and pay homage to the original games that inspired these sequences.
However, it's essential to ensure that the game's mechanics and sequences flow well together and maintain a cohesive experience. Balancing the parody elements with the overall gameplay and maintaining a sense of progression can help create a rewarding and enjoyable game for players.
Remember to consider copyright and intellectual property laws when incorporating elements from other games to ensure that the resulting product respects the original creators' rights.
