Recently, laser TVs are becoming more and more common in the market, and people do not know whether to buy LCD TVs or laser TVs. Today, let's actually compare the picture effects of large-screen laser TVs and LCD TVs to see what is the difference between them.

Laser TV vs LCD TV: what's different?

Laser TV is also a kind of projector in essence. However, the distance of his projection is very close to the screen, so the laser TV is also called an ultra-short-throw projector. Laser means that the projection light source is a laser light source, which has a longer life and more vivid colors.

1.Screen/Curtain

When compared laser TV and LCD tv, the most obvious difference is the laser TV is consisted of the projection body and the screen curtain, while TV is only the screen.

At present, laser TV screens basically use Fresnel screens or black grid screens. This is a special kind of curtain with a fine optical structure on the surface, which can shield the stray light and let the light emitted by the laser TV reflect as much as possible to the front.

More advanced laser TVs generally use Fresnel hard screens. Compared with the black grid screen, it has higher brightness, higher contrast and better picture effect when viewed from the front. But it is precisely because of this structure that the viewing angle of the Fresnel screen is very bad, and the brightness attenuation is very serious from the side, and the effect is far less than that of the black grid screen.

The semi-concentric Fresnel hard screen used in the laser TV can offset the stray light in the upper, left and right directions, but cannot offset the stray light from below. As long as the lights or curtains are turned on, the laser TV cannot avoid the influence of stray light from the bottom, causing the picture to be white.

2. Chip

The DMD chip is the core of the laser TV/projector, which determines the picture clarity. Current laser TVs use either 0.47-inch or 0.66-inch DMD chips. 0.66 inches is expensive, and the corresponding products are also very expensive. Therefore, relatively cheap laser TVs generally use 0.47-inch chips.

But whether it is 0.47 or 0.66 inches, it is necessary to dither to achieve 4K resolution, so there is still a certain gap with the native 4K resolution. The picture of laser TV is obviously not as clear and sharp as LCD TV.

3. Brightness

Most laser TVs use lumens or ANSI lumens as units, but consumers cannot intuitively feel how much brightness is. Some more confident brands use nits to express the brightness of laser TVs.

The measured brightness of my laser TV is between 320 and 340 nits, which is equivalent to the brightness of low-end LCD TVs. But in the laser TV, the picture brightness is about 350 nits, which is a high level. In the case of full shading, the laser TV's picture performance is better, and the colors are bright and full. However, as long as the curtains are opened or the lights are turned on, the picture effect will be obviously whitened due to the influence of ambient stray light.

LCD or OLED TVs need a peak brightness of 800 to 1000 nits to achieve good HDR effects. For ambient light, 1000 nits of brightness is actually very small, and the TV picture is only a small range / short time highlight.

4. Color Gamut

Many laser TVs will boast a high color gamut. Of course, it is really high. Whether it is a single-color two-color or three-color laser, the color gamut is very high, and the picture is colorful. In a fully shading environment, only quantum dot LCD TVs can compare with it. However, as long as there is ambient stray light interference, the whitening of the laser TV screen is more obvious.

Although laser TV does have many advantages, it does have shortcomings such as insufficient brightness and high price. The above is the comparison of laser TV vs LCD TV, I hope it can help you.
