Trials of Mana Remaster, a SFC classic released by Square in 1995, starts with an adventure with three of the six main characters, and breaks them into different plots based on the first one. After 25 years, this book has been completely remast, which not only has the picture of complete rebirth, but also has different levels of improvement in the system and game content. This time we will also do a general review of Trials of Mana Remaster.

Completely remastered after the performance of the game greatly improved screen

Before Trials of Mana Remaster, Secret of Mana was actually released in 2018 as a reworked version, but the reworked version of Secret of Mana was a bit disappointing compared to the original. First of all, although mapping and modeling are much more advanced than the original, but after the 3D feel somehow a little cheap. And some of the drama looks strange in today's era, even worse in places than the original SFC.

Trials of Mana

However, when it came to the remaking of Trials of Mana, the concerns raised by the previous perfunctory quality of the remaking were instantly removed. Compared to the other 3A monsters, it is not as good as it could be, but it is delicate, and it is not bad in a cartoon-style game. The plot cut scene is basically faithful to restore the original, it is difficult to use language to describe the story of that year with today's picture level to show the moved, such as the original hoke ai played hooligan scene in the remade version let people see more gnashing of teeth.

The character modeling is also very satisfying, and there are many different career costumes to choose from after a career change. When you change jobs, you can choose two different routes, light and dark, which can show their characteristics in clothes respectively.

The biggest difference is that the perspective of the game is changed from the perspective of the original SFC to the third person free perspective, which also makes a qualitative breakthrough in the game experience. After the perspective can be freely controlled, the performance of the game in the environment and the world view background has been greatly improved, and the sense of immersion in play has also been greatly enhanced. Although the camera's distance may not feel comfortable at first, it can be adjusted in Settings later.

However, there were problems with the full remake that you wouldn't have encountered in the original. That is, there are some uncomfortable situations with respect to perspective. For example, in the forest environment where there are many trees, the leafy ecology will cause a great degree of interference to the perspective. Environmental objects will not be transparent automatically when blocking the perspective, which is very discounting to the game experience. The other problem is that the locking function is not very good, and the operation of switching the locking target is not very smooth. And since you can't lock a target with a breakable object like a jar, it's almost impossible to knock on a jar in combat when you're locked on to the enemy.

The system re-builds the game experience

Compared to the original, the combat system in this game has been completely reconstructed. Generally speaking, it is a relatively simple combat system, which USES a combination of normal attack and heavy attack to strike, fly attack, range attack and so on. Added jump command, which also increases exploration in non-combat situations. In addition, the UI is also optimized. In the game, you can directly use the required skills and edited props/special effects through the wheel ring command, and the rhythm is very comfortable.

It is very convenient to allow other characters to use stunts or props without having to switch roles during combat

Skill points can be gained after the level is increased, and can be added to the cultivation interface to improve attributes or gain skills. You can also gain the ability to connect to specific NPCS when you talk to them, or when you complete a story, as an element of exploration. By switching jobs in different directions, you can unlock careers in different directions, and skills can vary greatly. Equip different skill can derive different play method, match skill when also do not have a fun. That's why, although it's an action character adventure type of game, the combat is still more RPG oriented than the action part.

The fly in the ointment is in the remake does not support multiple local online, it is a pity. This is also because the game's viewing Angle has changed from a bird 's-eye view to a third-person, free-form view, making it difficult to work with the same screen and discounting the experience.

Usually there are three characters in the team, and while controlling one character the other two teammates will host the AI. Players can make battle strategies in the menu, such as focusing on the same target or a target with lower HP. You can also adjust the frequency of your kill moves, props, and stunts, and the AI will strictly follow the established strategy to get the blood back when it's time to do so. While there are exceptions to this, for example, when Liz is hosting the AI, she may be able to use the expensive summoning magic Freya in any situation, but if the conditions are set too high, she will become completely non-magical, which is a dilemma.

On the other hand, AI is not very smart, which is mainly reflected in the fact that the enemy will not dodge when attacking, and there is basically no HP management. A few times running back and forth between HP replies made me a little overwhelmed, and in some cases it was safer (though less efficient) to fight back while avoiding the BOSS's attacks while leaving only one character.

Trials of Mana Remaster is a great value for money game, not only because it faithfully restores the content of the original, but also because it adds a lot of new elements. I'm sure players who enjoyed Trials of Mana back then will still enjoy it, and it's possible that new players will also enjoy it now.

New element Mr. Cactus

As mentioned before, the picture is completely remade, and the melodies that can be hummed off the top of your head have been rearranged, but you can switch between the Settings if you like the original source. And just like Secret of Mana Remaster, the game also adds character voice, which corresponds to almost all scenes. Combined with the new game screen, greatly enhance the performance of the story.

When playing the game, the next target will be marked on the map. The original intention of this design is to facilitate the player, so that the player will not lose the next goal. But it also makes the game's goals so obvious that when you come to a new town, you don't explore it, you go straight for it, and a lot of the towns are just going through the motions. Although ultimately it's about the way the player plays, it's not about the game design.

The storyline is basically the same as the original, adding new elements to review the original events of the company, and in some places adding a smile to the Easter egg. After clearance there are brand new story, maze and new career, which also have new magic, new kill skills, inside and outside all overflow beyond the expectations of the sincerity.

Although the plot and character building have faithfully restored the original work, from another perspective, many of the performance effects and lines that are applicable in those days will seem outdated in today's perspective. But it's a matter of opinion, because it's a remake of a classic, and maybe that's the goal of the development team.

"Trials of Mana Remaster" is a sincere remaking work. Different from the shoddy "Secret of Mana Remaster", it has put a lot of effort into the screen, system, supplementary content and other aspects. It's faithful to the original, reworked to modern game standards, and adds a whole new element of play. When playing, it feels completely different from the original, but the game is a variety of familiar elements, full marks for nostalgia. If you were addicted to the original Trials of Mana, this is a masterpiece that no one will regret.
