Someone was planning to strap two USB fans to the sides of a Denon S770H and run them off the receiver's own USB port to pull the hot air out. There is plenty of space either side of the unit and about an inch to an inch and a half above it. I have been down this road and it does not do what you want.
Air goes in low on those receivers and out through the vents in the top plate, because heat is going up whatever you do about it. Blowing air across the sides, where there is already free space, does very little for the amp section and transformer sitting directly under that top grille. The clearance above is the actual constraint, and an inch is tight for a unit driving seven channels. If the shelf above cannot move, the fix is a slim fan sitting on top pulling air up and out of the cabinet, not fans on the flanks pushing sideways into nothing.
Also, do not run them off the receiver's USB. On my gear those ports drop out in standby and they exist for a thumb drive, not a load. A small USB brick, or one of the thermostatic AV cooling units, costs very little and will not surprise you at the worst moment. Whatever you buy, listen to it from your seat first. Fan whine under quiet dialogue is far more annoying than a receiver running warm.
Honest question though. How often do modern AVRs actually shut down from heat, versus people building fan rigs out of fear?
