What is a Flicker Free TV? Is it a necessary function for OLED TVs?

Authorization ceremony for LG Display OLED panel to obtain "flicker-free" certification

The screen flashing phenomenon refers to a phenomenon that flashes rapidly such as lighting or pictures, and can be divided into "visual screen flashing" that is visible to the naked eye and "non-visual screen flashing" that is invisible to the naked eye. Gazing at a “non-visual screen flash” that cannot be recognized by the eyes for a long time can also cause headaches, visual fatigue, and decreased vision.

TUV Rheinland measurement results show that the "non-visible screen flash" phenomenon of LG Display OLED TV panels is determined to be 0%. This is because each pixel of the OLED panel has the characteristic of self-luminescence, so it is granted "flicker-free" certification. In addition, in the UL measurement results, the screen flash phenomenon standard is 9.6%, and the OLED TV panel has obtained the "flicker-free" certification mark at a lower 1.3%.

On the contrary, the LCD TV panel flashes and emits light in a very short period through the LED light source of the backlight, because the phenomenon of “non-visual screen flash” is bound to occur.

Wu Zhanghao, Deputy Director of LG Display TV Business Department, said: "During the new coronavirus pneumonia epidemic, as the public spends more time watching TV, the demand for TVs that are comfortable for the eyes is increasing. With this certification, consumers You can choose OLED TV products with more confidence."

Previously, LG Display OLED TV panels have effectively reduced the blue light that caused eye fatigue and sleep disorders to the lowest level in the industry, and obtained the Low Blue Light certification granted by TUV Rheinland; its OLED panel is lower than the International Electrotechnical Commission ( 50% of the harmlessness standards stipulated by the IEC), obtained the "blue light highest safety level" certification from UL, and OLED is rated as a display that meets eye comfort.

Recently, 19 manufacturers have launched OLED TVs. In order to continuously increase the popularity of large-size OLEDs, LG Display plans to apply the "low blue light" and "flicker-free" certification marks to OLED TV customers and channel providers worldwide.

Generally speaking, if you shoot a TV through the slow-motion video function of a smartphone, or use a portable electric fan, and observe the TV screen through the rotating fan blades, you can easily determine whether the TV has a screen flash.

LG Display's OLED TV panel opened the era of "flicker-free". Affected by the new coronavirus pneumonia epidemic, the increase in the amount of time people spend watching TV and the online learning of young people is increasing the demand for a display that can ensure eye comfort. "Flicker-free" has become the new standard for choosing TV.
