In addition to 4K, high dynamic range (HDR) has become an important trend in the development of television. HDR formats include HDR 10, HLG, Dolby Vision and HDR 10+, among which Dolby Vision is the most widely used HDR standard in the market. And just to give you a sense of it.

Dolby Vision

What is Dolby Vision?

Dolby Vision, a version of HDR, is designed to provide more image information, called metadata, that contains information about the brightness of each frame of a movie or TV show, so that a display device such as a TV can know exactly how to display the image throughout the movie. Because this information exists in each frame, it is called dynamic metadata, whereas HDR10 has only one data point or static metadata. In short, it is an HDR standard that USES dynamic metadata to provide you with better visual effects and improved image quality.

The main difference between Dolby Vision and HDR10 is the depth and brightness of the color that the content and the device can achieve. Compared to the 10-bit color depth of HDR (from which HDR10 derives its name), the content of it can achieve a maximum of 12-bit color depth.

What is the difference between a 12-bit color depth and a 10-bit color depth? Simply put, 12-bit shades can display more than 68 billion colors, while 10-bit shades can display only 1 billion colors. This means that the colors you see from a Dolby Vision-enabled device are more accurate and closer to what the human eye actually sees.

In addition, Dolby Vision can reach a peak brightness of 10,000 nitts, but no display currently supports this.

What is Dolby Vision IQ?

Dolby Vision IQ is an upgrade of the Dolby Vision standard, which automatically adjusts the image according to the ambient light. It USES sensors on the TV to detect ambient light levels and then automatically adjusts the contents of the Dolby Vision display. For example, houses have different levels of light throughout the day, either bright or dark, and Dolby Vision IQ can detect these changes and adjust the content accordingly, so that even if the light levels in the room change, you can see accurate and realistic colors on the TV.

Dolby Vision IQ will be launched in 2020 and will be available on Panasonic and LG TVs.

How many manufacturers support Dolby Vision?

To watch Dolby Vision content, you need to have the right equipment. The advantage of Dolby Vision TVs is that they can also support HDR 10, but HDR 10 TVs can't support it, so if you want a better experience, Dolby Vision is your best bet.

Initially, Dolby Vision's devices contained dedicated chips that could read metadata and copy images. However, as TV processors become more advanced, Dolby Vision can now be enabled with a software update.

We looked at the major Dolby Vision brands in the market: LG, Panasonic, Philips, SONY, TCL, Hisense, but that's not all.

To be clear, Samsung is not on the list. That's because Samsung USES a format called HDR10 +, which USES dynamic metadata but still has a 10-bit color depth instead of a 12-bit color depth. There are many TVs (Panasonic, Philips, SONY) that support Dolby Vision and HDR10 +, but there is no Samsung TV that supports it.
