Samsung TV has brought the sound experience to a new level. The OTS+ technology of sound and picture tracking uses artificial intelligence-based software to match the movement of objects on the screen through the movement of sound to achieve a more surround sound effect. Intelligent sound control technology can continue to track and detect external environmental noise, and Q Symphony can create a more realistic and three-dimensional sound.

If you have tracked the HWZ long enough, you may have heard of most of it, such as 2020 models supporting HDMI 2.1, 4K @ 120Hz, ALLM and eARC. For games, long-term features such as dynamic black equalizer and Game Motion Plus and new features such as this year's QLED TV's 9.8ms low input lag.

One thing in the infographic caught my attention: FreeSync Premium. We know that Samsung’s QLED TV has been supporting FreeSync for several years (currently chasing G-Sync certification), but FreeSync Premium?

What is FreeSync Premium?

One thing many people may not understand about FreeSync is that it now comes from a different level. There is a standard FreeSync that guarantees tear-free and low-latency games, but there is also a FreeSync Premium, which AMD just launched at CES in January this year. FreeSync Premium is the basic requirement of FreeSync. There are two other requirements: a refresh rate of at least 120 Hz and a low frame rate compensation (LFC) at 1080p resolution.

If you know FreeSync 2, the 120Hz refresh rate and LFC are not the exact news (more on this later), but the TV rarely mentions the latter at the same time. In short, LFC uses adaptive synchronization to make low frame rates run smoothly by displaying frames multiple times (twice, three times or even four times). This allows the content to be synchronized to the display at the refresh rate it supports (48Hz and above in Samsung TV's FreeSync Ultimate mode). And because FreeSync is still active, there is no jitter. AMD said in January that there are more than 300 monitors that support FreeSync Premium-Samsung now says it is the first TV to support this level.

But the fact is: FreeSync Premium is not a Samsung 2020 TV exclusive product; most of the company's 2019 models also provide this feature. Samsung is essentially re-emphasizing its FreeSync function under AMD's new brand. You can view the list of FreeSync-capable TVs here.
