Dark Shadows Volume 1 is 40 episodes of a five-year daily run, so count the volumes

Volume 1. That phrase is doing an enormous amount of work in this preorder listing, and it is the first thing anyone thinking about buying in should sit with.

Forty episodes, restored in high definition for the first time, plus an introductory featurette and new cast interviews. That is a perfectly reasonable set on its own terms. But the show ran daily on ABC from 1966 to 1971, and a daily daytime series across five years is an enormous number of episodes. Forty of them is not a season, it is a slice. If you buy in at Volume 1 you are committing to a release schedule that could run for years, at an unknown price per volume, with no guarantee anyone finishes it. Plenty of catalogue series have stalled at volume three when the sales curve flattened, and the people who bought early are the ones left holding a partial shelf.

The other thing I want spelled out before ordering is what "restored in high definition" actually means for a daytime production of that era. The elements a 1960s daily soap left behind are not the elements a feature film left behind, and the phrase covers a very wide range of outcomes. Nothing in the announcement says what was scanned or from what.

None of that means it is a bad release. If the transfer is honest this is the best that show has ever looked, and there is a real audience that has waited decades. I would just rather know the plan than find out at volume four.

Anyone here bought into a volume-by-volume classic TV release that actually got finished?
