Disney is still weighing a free Disney+ tier, and the point is the funnel

Disney talked about the free Disney+ tier again on the 5 August earnings call, and the framing is the interesting part. It is still only under consideration, no date, no implementation detail, and the stated purpose is explicitly an entry point - something to pull in price-sensitive viewers and convert them into paying Disney+ and Hulu subscribers, with the company's own ad inventory doing the heavy lifting in the meantime.

Read that as a viewer rather than an investor and it tells you what the tier will be like before it exists. A free layer built as a conversion funnel is not a free layer built to be good. Heavy ad load, because the advertising argument is half the pitch. Missing whatever people would otherwise upgrade for, which in practice means the new releases and the parts of the back catalogue anyone actually searches for. And it will nag.

Which would be fine except it lands in a market already stuffed with genuinely free ad-supported services that are not trying to sell you a subscription afterwards. If I want something playing in the background there are a dozen options and none of them have an agenda. Disney's version has to beat those while being deliberately worse than the paid product it feeds. Narrow lane.

The part I would watch is picture quality. Free tiers are where bitrate and resolution caps live, and if a lot of casual viewing settles there, plenty of people end up forming their opinion of how Disney+ looks from the worst version of it. That is a strange thing to do to your own shop window.

Would a free tier actually get you back in, or is it only ever an on-ramp for people who never left?
