Five months after its launch, Disney Plus has signed up more than 50 million paying customers worldwide. Disney's new video-streaming service had just passed the 28 million mark when it last announced its Numbers in February.

Disney Plus has gained about 22m net new subscribers in the past two months. Video on demand (VOD) subscriptions have received a big boost in the past two weeks when they were launched in several European countries, including the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, France and Switzerland.

The service also launched in India on April 3, along with the existing Hotstar service. In less than a week, the service has gained about 8m subscribers in India.

The global lockdown in response to the pandemic has also helped Disney. In the third week of march, the number of people signing up for Disney Plus tripled from the previous week.

While this locking may help Disney gain subscribers, it has its own problems. Its theme parks have closed, ESPN is not hosting any live sports, and movie distribution has been suspended. It also had to stop producing new content.

With 50 million subscribers, Disney Plus is four years ahead of its 2024 target

Disney launched its Disney Plus video streaming service in November. Prior to the launch, us mass media and entertainment group had set a target of 60m to 90m subscribers by the end of fiscal year 2024 (September 2024). But the company seems likely to push those Numbers up to the early fourth year

"We are humbled by the resonance of Disney Plus with millions of people around the world, and believe this bodes well for our continued expansion," Kevin Mayer, Disney's chairman, said in a news release. "Great stories inspire and inspire, and we are fortunate to be in a position to bring a lot of great entertainment on Disney Plus that stems from joy and optimism."

Mr. Mayer said Disney plans to continue expanding Disney Plus throughout Western Europe later this year. The service will also be available in Latin America and Japan. However, the current pandemic may cause some delays.

Still, Disney Plus is growing much faster than its rivals. For reference, Netflix has 167 million subscribers worldwide, of which about 60 million are in the United States.

Netflix was founded in 2007 and had more than 50 million subscribers by 2014. In the fourth quarter of 2019, it added nearly 9 million net users worldwide.

Amazon Prime Video also has more than 150 million paying viewers worldwide. But in terms of growth rates, they are no better than Disney Plus.

Hulu, Disney's VOD service, has 30m subscribers in America alone. The company is reportedly planning to launch the service in some international markets next year.
