Disney announced the Toy Story 5 disc details and the interesting part is buried near the bottom. The film runs 102 minutes and it is shipping on a 100GB disc. Disney's default for anything that is not a three hour epic is 66GB, and Archer says he double checked this with Disney twice because it read like a typo.
That is a lot of room for a 102 minute feature. Pixar output looks like easy material to encode, clean edges and no grain, but that is exactly where compression shows itself. The big flat skies and slow lighting ramps are where banding turns up on a Disney disc, and more bitrate is the only real fix for it. If they use the space rather than pad it out, this should be one of the better looking animated 4K releases.
The rest is standard: September 22, Dolby Vision with an HDR10 fallback, Atmos on the 4K, 1.85:1 theatrical ratio. The HD Blu-ray gets a 7.1 DTS-HD MA track and no HDR, which is the kind of split that makes the 4K the only version worth owning. In the US the only option is a limited edition SteelBook, so order early if you want it on a shelf instead of in a Prime Video library. Digital lands August 18, five weeks ahead of the disc.
