Samsung has started running Eclipsa Audio content on TV Plus, which is the first time the format has had anywhere to live outside YouTube. It is IAMF underneath, encoded and delivered through TV Plus channels, and if your set or bar does not support it you quietly get a stereo version instead. Right now the material is musicals and live performance. Samsung says K-pop concerts, classical, movies and sports are on the roadmap, and further out they are talking about letting you push vocals or a single instrument up in the mix, or swap between commentary and stadium sound during a game.
The part I keep coming back to is the demo itself. They captured a live performance in a 280-seat venue, converted it to Eclipsa, pushed it down a TV Plus channel and played it back on a Samsung television. A 280-seat room is small. That is a controlled space with a friendly ratio of direct to reflected sound, which is exactly where object audio flatters itself. Do the same capture in a 2,000-seat hall and the real question is whether the venue acoustics survive the encode or turn into wash.
What Eclipsa has that DTS:X never managed is distribution. TV Plus was reported at over 100 million monthly users back in February, roughly 4,300 channels across 30 countries, and nobody has to subscribe to anything to land on one.
What it does not have is a single film. Atmos has more than a decade of catalogue behind it. Does anyone here have an Eclipsa-capable Samsung and actually hear a difference on those concert channels, or is the stereo fallback quietly winning?
