In a quiet move this April, Google officially ended support for its first-generation Chromecast, marking the conclusion of a decade-long journey for the pioneering streaming device. Released in 2013, the initial Chromecast was followed by subsequent models over the years. However, in November 2022, Google released a final software update (version 1.36.159268) for the first-generation Chromecast, which mainly focused on bug fixes and improvements. While users can continue using the original Chromecast, Google warns that potential issues may arise in the future.

Google's Chromecast Help support page confirms the cessation of support for the first-generation Chromecast. This means that users will no longer receive any updates going forward. Additionally, Google will no longer provide any form of technical assistance for this product. Although these devices will continue to function, Google states that users may experience performance degradation.

Consider an Upgrade

Given the end of support for the first-generation Chromecast and the possibility of diminishing performance, users still relying on the original device may want to consider an upgrade. Despite the passage of a decade, the pricing for Chromecast has remained relatively consistent, with the latest models available for $30. Google has also expanded its product line, offering a 4K version of Chromecast that caters to the needs of most modern televisions.

Conclusion

With the discontinuation of support for the first-generation Chromecast, users may need to evaluate their options and consider upgrading to newer models. Google's pioneering streaming device has come a long way since its debut, and while the original Chromecast will continue to function, the absence of updates and potential performance issues may make an upgrade a worthwhile investment. With affordable pricing and a range of options available, including the 4K version, users can embrace the latest technology and ensure a seamless streaming experience on their televisions.
