The Canadian director got his start as an underground filmmaker, having previously made several films on violent and bloody subjects such as zombies and monsters, and on a shoestring budget. This is the first time the film has come close to mainstream taste, which may explain some of the large-scale scenes in the horror genre that are rarely seen in commercial films. The film has the story outline of polanski's "Nóz w wodzie", which starts with a precarious triangle relationship and sexual wrestling, but in the middle of the story unexpectedly turns into a maritime disaster type of interrogation of human nature. The plot of ang Ang Lee's "life of PI" is quoted many times in the drama, as well as the playful scenes in the black-and-white silent film, which adds some black humor to Allan Poe's postmodern adaptation of the shipwreck story. On top of that, the comedic performances of several actors (silly lines and awkward body movements) and the more basic Settings continually remove the heavy, twisted humanity from the story, and the director manages to strike a decent balance between comedy and horror. The last two reversals return to the core discussion of the dark side of human nature, and the outcome returns to the right track of moral standards. In this sense, the story is not a completely worthless commercial pastime.
