Magic games go free over the air, so my antenna suddenly matters again

Cox Media Group takes over as the Magic's local TV partner from 2026-27, and games land on WRDQ-TV 27 in Orlando with some on WFTV Channel 9. Jacksonville gets Action Sports Jax TV on WJAX 47.2, plus a few on CBS47 and FOX30. Free with an antenna, no regional sports network bill. The Hornets did the same thing with WSOC and TV64, and Gray has been assembling regional sports channels out of the wreckage for a while now.

Good news for the wallet, but look at 47.2 for a second. That is a subchannel, and that detail never makes the press release. A main service and its subchannels share one transmitter's bitrate, and basketball is close to the worst thing you can hand a starved encoder. Fast pans across a bright court, a crowd full of fine detail, constant motion. If they run that alongside a full main channel, motion is the first thing that goes.

The other half of this is your TV's tuner. Plenty of people have not touched the antenna input since the set came out of the box, and the tuners in cheaper panels are genuinely worse at holding a marginal signal than a decent external box. If you are in that market and planning to watch a full season this way, sort the antenna out now rather than in October when the schedule starts.

Antenna sports is great until the weather turns. I lost the last five minutes of a close game to a rain fade last spring and swore at the wall.

The RSN model finally dying is the real story and honestly good riddance. I paid for a sports tier for years to watch maybe forty games.

Subchannel point is the one to make. Ours runs three services off one stick and anything with a fast pan turns into a slideshow.

Worth finding out whether your market carries it as 720p or 1080i as well. That makes more difference on motion than most people expect.

Already antenna only here and it is fine 90 percent of the time. The other 10 percent is a plane going over.
