According to media reports, MediaTek S900 8K TV chip is ready for OEMs including the Skyworth Q91 8K TV. MediaTek is one of the leading suppliers of smart TV chips. The company officially released the S900 chip around July last year. In late November 2019, it hinted that the chip has begun mass production at TSMC.

The MediaTek S900 is manufactured using a 12 nm FinFET process. It uses a multi-core CPU with an ARM Cortex-A73 core, supports 8K video decoding, and has a Mali-G52 GPU with HDR10+ and external graphics. In terms of I/O, the chipset supports HDMI 2.1A, which provides a maximum bandwidth of 48Gps—enough to provide HDR10+ content and 4K video at 120Hz or 8K video at 60Hz.

MediaTek S900 also supports AI PQ (short for Artificial Intelligence Image Quality). Combined with MediaTek’s proprietary MiraVision-Pro and AI PQ, the S900 supports AI scene recognition, enabling S900-enabled TVs to improve image quality by optimizing color saturation, brightness, sharpness, dynamic motion compensation, and image noise, enabling native 8K effect.

MediaTek has provided the NeuroPilot software development kit (SDK) for the chip, so developers can build applications for the platform. When the TV equipped with the chip is equipped with other necessary components, it can use voice and gestures to control the hub of the smart home or IoT device.

We will see more OEMs use the chip in the follow-up, but considering the high price of 8K TVs and the inability of such TVs to provide 8K content, its sales should not be too good.
