On August 15th, Netflix unveiled a significant move into the realm of cloud gaming with the launch of an app named "Game Controller" on iPhone and iPad. Today, the company released a blog post detailing more about the app's functionality and testing plans.

Netflix stated that they will conduct limited testing among some TV users in Canada and the UK. They also plan to roll out testing on PC and Mac within the coming weeks through supported browsers on the Netflix.com website. On TVs, games can be played using the "Game Controller" app on a smartphone. PC and Mac users, on the other hand, can play games on Netflix.com using a keyboard and mouse. Netflix emphasized that this limited testing aims to evaluate their game streaming technology and controllers before the official launch of their gaming platform.

Here's a list of smart TV platforms compatible with Netflix:

  • Amazon Fire TV streaming devices
  • Chromecast with Google TV
  • LG TVs
  • Nvidia Shield TV
  • Roku devices and TVs
  • Samsung smart TVs
  • Walmart ONN
However, conspicuously absent from this list is Apple TV. This omission is due to Apple's adversarial stance towards cloud gaming. Apple needs to protect its App Store revenue stream, and allowing cloud gaming apps on iPhones, iPads, and Apple TV could undermine the App Store's lucrative mobile gaming transactions.

While Netflix expands into the cloud gaming arena, the notable absence of Apple TV underscores the challenges posed by platform-specific policies in the rapidly evolving landscape of gaming and entertainment streaming.
