Roku OS 15.3 has started a limited rollout to some TVs and players. It is still mostly a developer beta thing but it has reached a few consumer devices, and if you get it, do not go hunting for the new feature. There is not one.
The changelog is almost entirely for channel developers. Better control over caption placement when video is not fullscreen, higher precision doubles in SceneGraph fields, new type checking functions in BrightScript, ordered value retrieval from associative arrays, finer timing measurements, and improved image handling for rotation and scaling around a custom point. That is a maintenance release for the people building apps, not for the person holding the remote.
I would rather see this than the alternative, honestly. Roku's user facing updates have a habit of arriving with a new row on the home screen that you did not ask for, and the last few years have mostly been about finding new places to put ads. A release that quietly makes the SDK less painful and touches nothing you can see is the best kind of update from a platform that monetises attention.
The caption placement fix is the one thing that might surface for real users eventually. Captions sliding under a non fullscreen player or landing on top of UI has been a long running annoyance in a few apps, and now developers have a way to place them properly. Whether any of them bother is a separate question.
Rollout is gradual and automatic over the internet as usual. Has anybody actually landed on 15.3 yet, and did anything visibly change on your box?
