My sister asked me to find a cheap TV for her spare room, so I pulled up the 40-inch bracket on Amazon and ended up staring at two listings that cost exactly the same $149.99. Then I noticed the third one people keep recommending in these threads and I could not figure out why anyone buys it.
Roku Select Series 40-inch, $149.99, 4.5 stars from 1322 ratings, 10K+ bought in the past month. 1080p Full HD, which at 40 inches is a sensible resolution. The listing bullets are literally the same sentence pasted twice, which tells you how much effort went into the copy, but 1322 ratings at 4.5 is a real sample size. Nothing about refresh rate, HDR, or panel type is listed anywhere. What you are buying here is Roku's own OS on a basic panel, and the volume of buyers suggests people are not returning them.
Hisense QD4SR 40-inch, also $149.99, 4.5 stars from 759 ratings, 1K+ bought. This one lists QLED as the display tech and the title throws around "Hi-QLED," "Full Array LED," and "Dolby Audio." Here is my problem: full-array local dimming at 1080p on a $150 set is a claim I want to see a dimming zone count for, and there isn't one. "Hi-QLED" is not a standard term - it is Hisense branding on top of quantum dot film. That does not mean the color is bad, QLED film at this price is a genuine step over a plain panel, but the marketing is doing heavy lifting. Same price as the Roku, fewer ratings, better paper spec. That tradeoff is the actual decision here.
Amazon Ember 32-inch, $159.99, 4.4 stars from 6686 ratings, 2K+ bought. It is $10 MORE than both 40-inch sets, it is 32 inches instead of 40, and the bullet says HD 720p. Not 1080p. 720p. On a 32-inch screen you will notice it, especially with text-heavy streaming menus. You are paying a premium for the Fire TV interface, Alexa+, and the Ambient Experience feature. If you are already deep in the Alexa ecosystem and want voice control without a separate stick, that has value. For a spare room TV, it is the worst value of the three on pure picture per dollar, and the 6686 ratings mostly reflect how long this line has been sold, not how good it is.
Who each one suits: the Roku for anyone who wants the least drama and the biggest verified buyer base at 1080p. The Hisense for someone who wants the QLED color film and is willing to trust a brand-name panel over Roku's in-house one with fewer reviews behind it. The Ember only if Alexa control is non-negotiable and 32 inches genuinely fits the space.
One thing I could not answer from the listings: none of the three states a refresh rate, and none states whether the HDMI inputs are 2.0 or older. Does anyone here know if the Hisense QD4SR panel is actually 60Hz, or is it the 50/60Hz tuner spec dressed up as a panel spec?
