Seattle is running its preseason streams through Dolby OptiView with Dolby Vision this year, on the Seahawks app and on Seahawks.com, and locally over the air through KING 5 on ATSC 3.0 if you have a tuner that can take it. Press conferences and the other live digital coverage get the same treatment through the season. As far as I can tell they are the first single NFL team to wire OptiView into their own platform instead of waiting for a national broadcaster to do it.
Two things worth keeping straight before anyone gets excited. Dolby Vision is not 4K. Nobody has said what resolution these streams actually run at, and DV rides on an HD production chain perfectly well, so a 1080p HDR feed is entirely possible here. And the part that interests me more is the OptiView latency handling, not the HDR badge. I have lived the version where the neighbors yell three seconds before the ball lands on my screen. Fixing sync on a live feed is worth more to me on a Sunday than another hundred nits in the highlights.
Why the rest of the league cannot do this is the boring answer: regular season rights are carved up between multiple networks and every one of them owns its own production chain end to end. A team can do what it likes on its own app because it controls the whole pipe. Nobody controls the pipe for a CBS game.
Has anyone actually pulled the ATSC 3.0 feed off KING 5 in HDR? I want to know whether the over the air version looks different from the app, because if it does, that tells you where the compression is really happening.
