Sharp launches its first OLED TV

As established TV brands abandon the LCD technology that has dominated the TV market for more than a decade, TV makers are looking for ways to transition to new display technologies such as OLED and microLED.

Recently, acer, huawei, konka, xiaomi and Vizio announced plans to launch OLED TVs, and samsung is investing heavily in a special type of OLED TV, known as qd-oled.

Earlier this year, the nikkei reported that sharp's shift to OLED TVs was "the biggest reason for sharp's struggle in the high-end market" after 8K LCD TVS failed to attract buyers despite the planned 8K broadcasts for the Tokyo Olympics.

OLED TV with Android TV system

Sharp has now officially launched its CQ1 series OLED TV, which will be available in both 55 - and 65-inch sizes, starting at 280,000 yen in Japan.

They are based on a 4K LG Display panel, and sharp has developed a new "Medalist S1" video processor and HDMI 2.0 interface for TVs.

Sharp's first OLED TVs are based on the Android TV operating system, and their partnerships have expanded to other regions, including Europe, where sharp has launched entry-level Android TVs based on LCD panels.

The company hasn't said what it plans to do outside of Japan, but we can expect a planned launch in Europe to be announced during the IFA in September, and North America to be announced during the CES in January.
