Hiromi Wakai, Deputy Product Management Director of Sony PlayStation, recently revealed in an interview that the demand for the cloud-based streaming handheld PlayStation Portal has exceeded Sony's expectations.

Wakai stated that while specific sales data cannot be disclosed at present, the demand for Portal has consistently surpassed expectations. She admitted that initial skepticism from the market about Portal was not surprising because "Portal was designed from the outset to meet the needs of specific players and playstyles, so the feedback after its release aligns with our expectations."

Wakai emphasized that Portal is not a traditional handheld console, and the initial discussion did not revolve around launching a standalone handheld, but rather "how to expand the console gaming experience, rather than introducing a separate handheld device."

With the success of the Nintendo Switch, dedicated handhelds have regained popularity in the gaming industry, and the Steam Deck has also sparked excitement. Additionally, there are rumors that Xbox is also developing its own handheld.

Wakai attributes Portal's success to players actively exploring its potential uses and providing positive feedback on its performance. Currently, the most popular games on Portal include "EA Sports FC," "Call of Duty," "Fortnite," and "Marvel Spider-Man 2." Wakai stated that the initial users provided "a lot of positive feedback," but she also acknowledged that an unstable network environment could affect the experience of some players.

Although official overall sales data for Portal has not been disclosed, its continuous shortage suggests high demand. Additionally, Portal has caught the attention of hacker groups who have successfully hacked it to run PSP games, among others.

Wakai also mentioned that Portal production is "proceeding smoothly," and while she did not reveal future plans, she stated that Sony "will continue to introduce more devices to the market, so stay tuned."
