The Dolby Vision 2 story that matters this week is not the TV rollout, it is a one-line statement from Sony. After Dolby confirmed DV2 can be enabled on existing 4K Blu-ray players with firmware, TechRadar went and asked the player makers whether they would do it. Sony's answer was that it has no plans to support Dolby Vision 2 on its current Blu-ray player lineup. Panasonic and Magnetar have not answered yet.
What bothers me is how little the player is being asked to do here. The disc carries the metadata, the TV does the processing, and the player's job is to hand the data across the cable intact. That is closer to a passthrough flag than a new decoder. Sony saying no to it is not an engineering decision, it is a product lifecycle decision, and it lines up with a company that has not shipped a genuinely new player in years and is reportedly leaving the drive out of the PS6 entirely.
The other half of the catch sits on the disc side. DV2 metadata has to be authored onto the release, so nothing already on your shelf improves even in the best case. New pressings only, and the studios have not exactly queued up to announce those. Dolby's position is that a DV2 television still improves ordinary Dolby Vision content by itself, which matches what people are reporting from the Hisense firmware, but that is the TV working alone with no help from the deck.
If you were holding off on a player upgrade waiting for the format picture to settle, this is your answer and it is not a good one. Is anyone here still planning to buy a new deck, or is the one you own the last one you will own?
