TCL's new mid-range LCD TV, with 4K resolution, Android TV and dolby vision support, starts at 700 euros for a 50-inch model.
The new TCL C815 (or C81) and TCL C715 (or C71) are positioned as excellent quality and reasonable price TVs that can compete with similar products from major LG and samsung brands. TCL said it was performing strongly in Europe, where TV sales rose 35 per cent in 2019.
As mid-range models, the C815 and C715 lack the advanced imaging systems found in the high-end X10 and X915 models. The C815 USES a side-light LED LCD panel, while the C715 USES a thin straight-down LED LCD panel. TVs don't have regional dimming, and they range in size from 50 to 75 inches.
Instead, TCL highlighted the Google Android TV operating system as a key feature and advantage. Android TV is slow to update, but it still works, and TCL will start rolling out Android 10 on its TVs in the second half of this year. TCL has not commented on the rumor that the next version of Android TV (Android 11) will include support for Stadia, a Google game streaming service. It does say, however, that its 2020 models will have input latency as low as 8ms.
The company believes Android TV is well positioned to ride the new streaming services sweeping Europe. TCL says, for example, that all of its Android TVs dating back to 2016 are compatible with Disney +. Android TVs also come with built-in Chromecast and Google Assistant.
Together with samsung and hisense, TCL is a member of the QLED alliance, which allows it to use the "QLED" brand for LCD TVs with quantum dots, such as the C815 and C715. HDR compatibility is also listed in the spec, including support for dolby vision, but for the HDR image experience, you should turn your attention to an LCD TV (such as TCL X10) or a self-luminous display (such as OLED) that has a regional dimming capability, and the C815 has a maximum brightness of 400 nitts.
