Build thread worth a look, and worth arguing with a little. First dedicated room for this guy, 7.1.4, and the front of it is a 115-inch TCL RGB set rather than a projector. Marantz Cinema 30 running everything, Infinity Beta on the floor, 8 inch KEF in the ceiling, a Salamander Chicago 245 holding the gear, Weilanda seats up front and an Ashley double chaise on the second row.
The choice I keep circling back to is the display. A dedicated, light-controlled room used to be the one place a projector was the obvious answer, because you were buying screen size per dollar and you had the darkness to make it pay off. A 115-inch panel in that room says the calculation has flipped, at least for anyone willing to fund the panel. You get black level and output a projector cannot touch, and you give up the last twenty or thirty diagonal inches. In a room that is already treated, I understand the trade completely.
One thing I would push back on. The ceiling tiles were individually painted flat black but the drop ceiling grid was left white, and that grid is a lattice of thin reflective lines sitting directly above a very bright screen. Projector owners obsess over exactly this. With a 115-inch panel pushing serious output the physics has not changed, it just moved. Painting the grid is a cheap afternoon next to everything else that went into that room.
The walls are already on his to-do list so this is less a criticism than a suggestion about order of operations. Has anyone run a big panel in a fully treated room and found the grid actually mattered on screen?
