The 2026 box office is up 19% and premium screens are why I left home

The number that stopped me was 6.54 billion domestic through August 10, running 19.1% ahead of the same point last year and 28.8% ahead of 2024. It is even 6.9% ahead of 2023, which was the Barbie and Oppenheimer year. For context, all of 2025 finished at 8.66 billion, so the back half of this year has a real shot at something we have not seen in a while.

What interests me is not that people are going out again, it is what they buy when they go. Five releases have already crossed a billion worldwide, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day did 655.1 million domestic in ten days. But the pattern at my local place is that standard auditoriums sit half empty while the premium rooms sell out. I have a treated, calibrated room at home and I still bought Dolby Cinema tickets twice this summer, because a screen that size and a room I am not the one shaking with my own sub is simply a different product from a panel on my wall.

December is where it gets messy. Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three are both dated December 18, and Dune is already selling advance IMAX 70mm tickets. Two films built for premium presentation fighting over the same small pool of screens on the same weekend is a problem exhibitors made for themselves, and somebody is getting the fake laser house.

So where is the line for you. What actually makes you leave a properly set up home theater and buy a ticket?

Premium screens sell out here too but I stopped booking Dolby for dialogue movies. Paying a surcharge to hear a courtroom drama in Atmos never made much sense to me.
