The Fast and the Furious on 4K for $19.96, and the Atmos remix is the risk

Twenty quid is the interesting part of this release, not the anniversary badge. Universal has put the 2001 original out in new two-disc editions with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and the standard edition is going for $19.96 against a $29.98 list while the SteelBook is $29.96 against $34.99. For a 4K disc plus the Blu-ray plus a digital code, that is catalogue pricing rather than collector pricing, which is not what usually happens when a studio hangs a 25th anniversary sticker on something.

The new content is one featurette, Riding a Legacy: 25 Years of Fast, with Diesel, Rodriguez, Brewster, Neal Moritz and Meadow Walker. Everything else is the legacy pile that has been following this film around since the DVD days, commentary, deleted scenes, the Turbo Charged Prelude, the music videos, all of it. So you are not buying it for the extras.

The part I would want to hear before committing is the Atmos track. This was mixed in 2001 and the original sound design is a fairly aggressive 5.1 with a lot of low end pushed at you deliberately. Upmixes of that era go one of two ways: either the height channels get given genuine ambience and the mix opens up, or the bass management gets rebalanced, the punch comes out of it and it ends up politer than the disc you already own. Dolby Vision on a 35mm-shot film from that era is usually the safer bet of the two.

Anyone picked it up already? Specifically, how does the Atmos track handle the tunnel and the truck sequences against the old Blu-ray?

Under twenty for a 4K plus BD plus digital is basically what catalogue discs should cost. The SteelBook markup for a tin is where they get you.

Turbo Charged Prelude being carried over is the only extra I actually care about. Good that it survived another format jump.

My worry with these era remixes is dialogue. Every upmix I have compared has pulled the centre channel down a notch and this film is not exactly quiet.

Got the standard edition. Watched the first act. Picture is a clear step up on the Blu-ray, grain looks natural, no obvious scrubbing. Have not turned the Atmos on yet.

Universal have been inconsistent on catalogue 4K. Some are genuinely new scans and some are the old master with HDR poured over it. This one looks like the former to me.
