What Hi-Fi has run a physical media flag-waving piece, and the recommended 4K Blu-ray players are the Sony UBP-X700K in the middle, the Panasonic DP-UB820 as the overall pick and the DP-UB9000 at the top. If those names feel familiar it is because they have been the answer for years. The piece even admits prices have gone up since the reviews were written, which is a polite way of saying nothing new has arrived to undercut them.
That is worth sitting with for a second. In any other category, a buying guide recommending the same three products year after year would be embarrassing. Here it is simply accurate. Panasonic has not needed to replace the UB820 because nobody came at it, Sony has effectively stopped developing, and the enthusiast slots get filled by Magnetar and Reavon at prices that are not really competing with a UB820 anyway. The guide is stable because the market stopped moving.
The disc half of the article I liked more. Blade Runner 2049 chapter two is their bass scene, which I suspect half this forum uses without admitting it. Pan is in there because it was mastered at an unusually high 4000 nits, and Sinners made the cut for the scene where Sammie plays the blues. They also mention they no longer review 4K Blu-rays at all, which tells you something about where the outlet thinks its audience went.
My own test disc rotation has barely changed in five years either, which is either discipline or laziness. What is actually in your rotation right now, and has anything from the last two years earned a permanent spot in it?
