What is MEMC for projector?

When purchasing a smart projector, it is often seen that the product supports the MEMC motion compensation function, so what is the function of this function? What does it mean?

What is MEMC for projector?

In fact, the motion compensation function is very easy to understand. Literally, it is to supplement the fast-moving pictures one by one to achieve the effect of smooth motion. It works by artificially adding frames to a video with a low frame rate, giving it a higher frame rate and giving it a smoother effect. The video below shows this feature in action.

This is a video clipped with a slowdown with motion compensation turned on. When viewing fast-moving footage before motion compensation is turned on, the difference may not be apparent to the naked eye. However, after slowing down the editing, you will find that the picture will be much smoother when the motion compensation function is turned on.

Why do projectors need MEMC?

Most movies today are recorded in 24-frame format. But our screen supports 60fps and higher 120fps. When a movie with a lower frame rate is played on a larger screen, since the screen ratio is larger in the visual field, if the frame rate of the movie is too low, the stuttering and discomfort will be more serious.

There are three types of motion compensation algorithms:

The first and the best. The chip will calculate the new picture content in the middle of the two frames, that is, predict the motion trajectory of the objects in the picture, and use the motion compensation between the two frames to present a smoother video.

The second is to insert duplicate frames in the two-card screen. That is to insert the same picture to achieve a smoother effect, but the picture may not be as good as the first method in very high-speed motion, but the effect is also good for daily viewing.

The third is to insert black frames in two frames. Some very cheap TVs use this method, which is deceiving the eyes, similar to the principle of adjusting the flicker frequency of some mobile phones to adjust the brightness of the screen.

Although inserting duplicate frames between two frames has a certain effect, it can be optimized to a certain extent in slower frames. But in response to some fast-moving pictures can not make essential changes.

So if TVs and projectors have motion compensation functions, they can compensate for the problem of dropped frames due to fast motion. It plays a better role in watching action movies and sports competitive movies, and secondly, this function is also very important for gamers. Especially for game consoles such as PS5, the better the display device, the better it can play the role of the game console.

Many projectors have added this function, such as Dangbei, XGIMI, Nut and other large-screen projectors, but they also have their differences.

First, adding this feature requires a processor that supports motion compensation. In terms of processors, the flagship projectors of Dangbei, XGIMI and JMGO are all equipped with MediaTek MT9669 master chip. The stronger the computing power of the chip, the better the overall smoothness of the picture after motion compensation.

Therefore, for users who like to watch fast moving pictures, when choosing projection, the motion compensation function can make the picture smoother. In this regard, I recommend a 4K laser projector Dangbei Mars Pro. It not only has high brightness and motion compensation functions, but also supports intelligent functions such as automatic entrance, automatic keystone correction, and automatic obstacle avoidance. For gamers, motion compensation + game mode can better play the role of their host.

The protector is very good by the way, I like that it can work autonomously for a long time.
