According to MacRumors, apple is expected to integrate ambient light sensors into its new AirPods in the next few years, which will be manufactured by a Taiwan company ASE Technology.

According to MacRumors, the original report didn't say what the ambient light sensors would be used for, and some speculated that apple might just be using them to replace the existing optical sensors in the AirPods. But MacRumors doesn't think so. They think the ambient light sensor on the new AirPods probably has something to do with the health-monitoring feature that was leaked earlier.

According to the survey, the rumors about apple AirPods' health monitoring capability can be dated back to the beginning of last year, when several media reported that apple would launch a new AirPods with health monitoring capability in the first half of this year. Although apple did release the AirPods 2 in March 2019, they didn't include health monitoring, disappointing apple fans who were expecting it.

Will Apple's new AirPods support heartbeat detection?

Health has always been a focus for Apple, which built its first Apple Watch with a heart rate monitor. Apple hopes to provide more accurate health data, combining health monitoring data with a medical-monitoring APP that will allow people to pay more attention to their health than just checking the time, texting or making phone calls.

Until then, if Apple users wanted to be able to use the health monitoring function, their only option was to buy an Apple Watch. As Tim Cook said, "health monitoring is the core of the Apple Watch." Apple fans would like to see the feature added to their must-have AirPods rather than buying the expensive Apple Watch separately.

How to realize the function of health monitoring on the headset is also a big problem. The health monitoring features of apple's wearable products generally use optical plethysmography, where the blood absorbs green light and reflects red light, and the ambient light sensor senses red light to measure blood oxygen/pulse rate. When the technology is used on a headset, infrared light is usually emitted from the earlobe and picked up by a light sensor on the other side.

According to MacRumors, the traditional AirPods are in-ear headphones and don't seem to be a good fit. As things stand, apple's rumored AirPods Studio, a pair of real, wireless headphones, seems to be a better fit for the technology, which is expected to enter mass production in the middle of this year.
