Apple pushed tvOS 27 into public beta on July 14 and I caved and put it on a 3rd gen Apple TV 4K the same night. Enrolling is the usual dance: sign your Apple ID up at beta.apple.com, then Settings, System, Software Updates, switch on Beta Updates. It also works on the 2nd gen box. Nothing dramatic, and the final version arrives this fall on your box either way, so the only reason to do this is curiosity.
The headline is speed. Apple says up to 30% faster app launches, a more responsive Control Center, quicker AirPlay handshakes to Apple TV and HomePod. Two weeks in, apps do seem to get to a usable screen sooner, but I am not going to pretend I can separate a real 30% from wishful thinking without a stopwatch and more patience than I have. "Up to" is carrying a lot of weight in that sentence, and not every planned feature is in the first beta anyway.
The part nobody seems to be talking about is Apple Music finally getting Hi-Res Lossless at 24-bit/192kHz on tvOS, plus AutoMix and Crossfade transitions. If your Apple TV feeds a decent AVR, that is a bigger practical change than app launch times will ever be. Podcasts got a redesign that now handles video podcasts, and there is Thread 1.4 and on-device processing for HomeKit Secure Video.
One thing to check before anyone gets excited about accessibility: the auto-transcription to subtitles is English only and only runs on the 3rd gen box, and automatic subtitle translation is not in tvOS 27 at all. With a hardware refresh expected later this year that may bring Apple Intelligence to the platform, is anyone else deliberately leaving their current box on the stable build?
