Came across Home Cinema Choice's review of the QE65S95D, which was Samsung's 2024 QD-OLED flagship, and it made me wonder what these are going for now that S95H units are landing in people's houses.
The S95D is the one with the matte anti-reflection finish, and that single decision is still the most divisive thing Samsung has done to an OLED. In a room with windows behind the seating it is genuinely transformative - reflections turn into a soft grey haze instead of a mirror of your own lamp. In a properly dark room some people find it lifts the black floor slightly and takes a bit of the wet, glassy pop off specular highlights. Both descriptions are accurate. They are just describing two different rooms.
So the buying question is not really which generation is newer. It is whether you watch in daylight or in the dark. If your living room is bright and you have given up on curtains, a discounted S95D probably beats paying flagship money for a glossy panel you will fight with every afternoon. If you watch films at night with the lights off, the matte layer is a tax you are paying for nothing.
What I have not seen anyone answer properly is how the coating is holding up after a couple of years of cleaning. Matte finishes on monitors have a reputation for going patchy if you get anything harsher than a dry cloth near them.
Anyone here had an S95D long enough to say whether the surface is wearing? That is what would decide it for me, not the panel generation.
