Apple put out the September Friday Night Baseball schedule and buried the interesting part in it. The Red Sox at Yankees game on August 28 is the first Friday Night Baseball carried live in Apple Immersive on Vision Pro. Angels at Pirates on September 4 and Giants at Dodgers on September 18 get it as well, so two of the six September games.
Apple says the immersive feed is 3D video captured in 8K with a 180-degree field of view, with its own commentary, replays and stats built for the headset. That is a separate production, not the TV feed reprojected, which is presumably why it is only on three dates. Somebody has to physically rig those cameras.
The thing nobody says out loud: 8K across 180 degrees is not 8K the way we mean it on a television. Spread that pixel count over a half sphere and the angular resolution lands well below what a 65-inch panel gives you at three metres. It will feel enormous and it will not look sharp the way a clean 4K broadcast looks sharp. Live stereo 3D also struggles with fast objects crossing the frame, and baseball is largely fast objects crossing the frame.
It is live in the US, UK, Canada, Germany, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Australia on a $12.99 a month subscription, with no local blackouts on these games.
I would watch one. I would not watch a season strapped into a headset while everyone else is on the sofa. Has anyone here sat through a full game in Immersive without taking it off?
