Continuous Audio Connection is downmixing your 7.1 tracks to 5.1

Someone posted this on the home theater sub and it explains an issue a few people here have complained about. On Apple TV, under Settings, Video and Audio, Audio Format, there's a Continuous Audio Connection option. Leave it on and the box holds an open 5.1 LPCM pipeline to the receiver at all times, which is there to stop the little sync delay and the clipped menu sounds you get when an AVR has to relock every time audio starts.

The cost is that the pipeline defines what gets sent. Play a TrueHD or DTS-HD 7.1 file through Infuse and it comes out downmixed to 5.1, and stereo content gets upmixed instead of arriving as stereo. Turning the setting off restores the correct behaviour. If you have a 7.1 layout and a library of untouched rips, that's two surround channels you paid for and haven't been hearing.

Worth being clear about who this affects. If you mostly stream, you're rarely getting 7.1 anyway, most services top out at 5.1 or object-based Atmos, so you may genuinely prefer the setting on and enjoy not losing the first half second of every clip while the receiver wakes up. It's a real trade, not a bug to be angry about. Apple's default just assumes you care more about instant audio than about channel counts, which is the right call for most living rooms and the wrong one for anyone reading this forum.

Easy check: put on a known 7.1 track and look at the receiver's front panel display rather than trusting the app. Anyone found other settings that quietly change what reaches the AVR?

Just checked mine and it was on. Receiver was showing 5.1 on a file I know is 7.1. Never occurred to me to question it, thanks.
